Religion & Spirituality at Ney Church of God, Ney, OH

The Ney Church of God was built in 1870, two miles east of Ney on Mulligan’s Bluff Road, about one mile north of State Route 15, where Doll Cemetery is still located. In 1898 the bethel (building) was relocated to Main Street on the east edge of Ney.

The original cost of building the church was $1,000. It was commonly known as the Winebrennerian Church. It was one of four churches in Washington Twp. When it was moved, it was called The Bethel Church of God. It would have been moved farther into town except for the problem of crossing Lick Creek. The bell tower was moved separately and reinstalled on the church.

In 1937, a basement was built under the church. In 1966 an addition was built onto the front of the church. The bell tower was removed and the bell was relocated a few feet East of the building.

In 1993 the congregation approved the construction of a new facility just North of Ney on State Route 15. Construction began in August, 1994. On September 17, 1995, the new bethel was dedicated to the worship and glory of God.

With the growth of the church and the interest to meet a younger generation’s style of worship, in August, 2000, a contemporary worship was added to the Sunday morning schedule. The church continues to hold a blended/traditional style and a contemporary style worship services.

The Ney Church is a part of the Churches of God, General Conference (CGGC) and the Great Lakes Conference (GLC), CGGC, both headquartered in Findlay, OH. The Great Lakes Conference which is comprised of congregations in Michigan and Ohio. The Conference runs Camp Otyokwah in Butler, OH.

The CGGC denomination began when the human founder, John Winebrenner, born in 1797, established the first Church of God congregation in Harrisburg, PA in 1825. The expansion of the United States and migration of church members westward brought the Churches of God into Ohio. Today the Churches of God, General Conference is comprised of over 400 churches in 7 conferences in the United States. The CGGC also conducts in mission work in Arizona, New Mexico, India, Bangladesh, Haiti, and Brazil. The denomination is the founder of and affiliated with The University of Findlay (formerly Findlay College) and Winbrenner Theological Seminary, both located in Findlay, OH.
