In 1882, the Markey Hotel of downtown Hicksville, Ohio was enlarged and converted to the Huber Opera House.  The Hubers used the Opera House as a 'try-out' theatre for shows headed for larger venues of Chicago and New York.

Through the years, the Opera House has hosted countless local and professional acts and speakers.  Amelia Bingham, William Jennings Bryan, Ricky Nelson, Chubby Checker, Three Dog Night, Huey Lewis and the News,  Mickey Rooney, Mike Smith's Rock Engine, and Hart's Boys' and Girls' Bands all took advantage of the theatre's perfect acoustics.

Local events such as high school graduations,  Red Cross and war bond meetings, talent reviews, basketball games, and other local happenings, plus May Brothers' movies were held at the Huber, too, and for nearly 100 years, the Huber Opera House was the cultural center of the area.

In the 1980s, out of town ownership and lack of care turned the building into a nightclub - an eyesore and trouble spot.  Concerned citizens joined together to "save" the building from pending destruction and embarked on a ten year restoration project.  At the halfway point, with donated money and a huge diversity of volunteer labor totaling thousands of hours, the Huber is once again becoming the beautiful  pride of the community.

As in years past, the Huber hosts a continuous and wide variety of events, "enriching the lives of people in the area with education and entertainment" - a reminder of our past and an investment in our future.
