DEFIANCE is proud of its many educational opportunities, both public and private. The Defiance City Schools have been at the forefront of internet technology, developing their own web sites and encouraging students to use the Web. The Defiance College, chartered in 1850, remains one of the most unique small colleges in the state of Ohio. Private SchoolsSt. Mary's Catholic SchoolThe mission of St. Mary Catholic School is to provide our students the opportunity to learn about their Creator and their world in a positive way. The faculty and staff strive to meet the needs of each child, guiding and helping them to become responsible, caring and loving members of society. St. Mary's School strives to insure that each child will acquire and develop the basic scholastic skills. The school is also dedicated to the development of each student's spiritual, academic, emotional, cultural, social and physical potentials. The responsibility of education is to offer students the opportunity to unfold and discover themselves while promoting self-esteem, respect for others, and fostering creative and critical thinking. The educational program at St. Mary's School is developed through the cooperative efforts of the parish community, school staff, and parents. Monthly School Council meetings, Irish Boosters, room parents, and grade level programs encourage parish-wide involvement with our students. Public Schools
Defiance High SchoolDefiance High School is a four-year high school with a student enrollment of about eleven hundred students, including about one hundred D.H.S. students who attend Four County Joint Vocational School. The diverse student population represents the cultural diversity of the city of Defiance. The staff at Defiance High School includes sixty teachers, three guidance counselors, a librarian, an athletic director and two administrators. Nearly seventy-five percent of the staff have Masters' degrees. Students here have a wide range of course offerings to select from including school-to-work programs and advanced placement classes. Defiance High School is also a member of the ten-team Western Buckeye League, and male and female athletes have an assortment of interscholastic sports in which they may participate. Good Samaritan School The Good Samaritan School is operated by the Defiance County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities through generous taxpayer support. Services are provided on a non-discriminatory basis to pre-school and school age students, and additionally for adults including senior citizens. Good Sam also offers family resource, case management, and supported living services to county residents. Good Samaritan provides Early Childhood Services, a complete School-Age Program, Specialists, Recreational Services, and Case Management to meet the needs of our students. The Defiance County Board of MRDD offers numerous services designed to promote unity within families whose members have qualifying disabilities. Preschool Classes There are six preschool classes for children ages three to five years old. Individual programs are followed for each child giving them many growth experiences. Extensive work is done with language, body movement, self-care, getting along with others and readiness skills. Preschool classes are limited in size to twelve students. Children with developmental delays are in classrooms with typically developing peers.Good Samaritan School-age Program School-age Program Good Samaritan School provides services to students from age five through twenty-one. There are five school-age classes. These classes provide training in self-help, basic knowledge, communication, fine and gross motor, socialization, independent living, leisure, and vocational skills. The emphasis for the Vocational Class is independent living skills and vocational training for competitive employment. Specialists Many of the children served by Good Samaritan School have a myriad of handicapping conditions requiring the expertise of individuals trained in specific areas. A physical development specialist, physical therapist, occupational therapist and two speech therapists provide ancillary services for 125 children. Recreational Services Good Samaritan School provides many recreational opportunities for children and adults. Through Special Olympics, individuals are able to participate in basketball, swimming, bowling, tennis, and track and field. Annually Good Sam hosts an area Special Olympics swim meet and bowling tournament. Good Sam has also hosted the Area IV Basketball Tournament in a ten county area. Case Management Case management is a service available for students eligible for MR/DD services. Case managers help coordinate resources with agencies and professionals in the area assisting families in identifying services to meet needs and goals. These services are intended to maximize the quality of an individual's life in the least restrictive manner. Vocational
Community Employment Once an individual expresses an interest in community employment, he/she will be referred to the Rehabiliatation Services Commission. Steps toward successful community employment include job compatibility, finding a job through a job developer. A job coach will train the individual and gradually fade out as the individual becomes proficient at performing the job.
